Pasta making as an engaging enabler for enhancing team-building skills and strengthening leadership in today’s Research Management and Administration

Newcomers and leadership workshops
27th and 30th of March 2019

Presenters: Susi Poli (Registrar-Head of administration office at Department of Mathematics, Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna susi.poli@unibo.it ) and Jan Andersen (Senior Executive Advisor Research Support DTU mail to: jande@adm.dtu.dk)
Chair: Ragnar Lie (Oslo Uni)
Assistants: Anna Groeninx van Zoelen (Leiden Uni), Paula Wennberg (Lulea Institute of Technology), Natasha Bailey (Galway) and Debora Di Rocco (UniBo, to be confirmed).

Two workshops: one targeting newcomers taking place on the 27th of March and the other for leaders to be held on the 30th of March. The two workshops will differ: the one, targeting newcomers to the conference, will enhance people’s skills by providing a fast-track to networking with colleagues, and hereby improving your outcome of the conference while setting up key partnership in pasta making and in research.  The other, addressing leaders holding roles in the EARMA board and its committees, will show how community engagement and overall happiness at work can be enhanced when leaders can show humanity, sensitivity, and overall attention to people’s needs.

Lenght: 3 hours each

Newcomers’ workshop: 27 March 2019

Revamp your conference outcome: the EARMA Pasta Making Exercise Bologna 2019 (EPME_Bologna2019) will give a power-introduction to new colleagues, be fun, and a teamwork learning experience to remember for lifetime. After a short introduction, you will take part in a real life cooking exercise, which will challenge you and your skills and take you to reflect on who you are and on the importance of roles and teamwork in today’s Research Management and Administration.

Items on the agenda of the workshop, which will be discussed and worked with in a practical surrounding, will be: typologies of team players; roles in managing; handling stressful situations, among the main ones. Materials will be provided in advance for people to read and to get prepared to: these including articles from literature on research management worldwide and on cooking as a powerful tool to enhance collaboration and team building overall.

The pasta making exercise (EPME) was performed at annual conferences in 2015 and 2016 and has proven to be a dynamic, creative and also a challenging but refreshing learning process.

Please note: as the main part of the exercise will be practical pasta making, participants should wear practical clothes. As there is only a limited amount of places (12) available for the pasta making, participants will be required to pre-register.

A fee of 75€ per participants will be charged (for materials, kitchen, drinks and food).

Leadership workshop 30 March 2019

We will focus on formal and informal leadership: this year’s EPME will focus on the role of community engagement and how you can make people happy at work when you lead a research group, an office or even a research division.
